PCI Express (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) is officially abbreviated as PCIe. It is a computer expansion bus standard designed to replace the older PCI, PCI-X, and AGP bus standards. PCIe has numerous improvements over the older bus standards including higher maximum system bus throughput, lower I/O pin count & smaller physical footprint, better performance-scaling for bus devices, a more detailed error detection and reporting mechanism and native hot-plug functionality. The most recent revisions of the PCIe standard support hardware I/O virtualization.
The PCIe format specifications are maintained and developed by the PCI-SIG (PCI Special Interest Group), a group of more than 900 companies that also maintain the conventional PCI specifications. PCIe 3.0 is the current production standard for expansion cards that is available on hardware that Sarsen Technology supplies.
Trenton Technology designs and manufactures a wide range of PICMG 1.3 PCIe format System Host Boards (Single Board Computers) and passive backplanes, and provides 19” rackmount system chassis based on the PICMG 1.3 components.
BittWare is a leading supplier of Altera Stratix V FPGA PCIe format boards. BittWare’s PCIe boards are supported by their ATLANTiS FrameWork (AFW) which promotes design and FPGA code re-use while reducing risk, trimming development time, and significantly cutting program costs.
General Standards Corporation has numerous I/O cards in true PCIe form factor and any GSC I/O card can be easily converted to true PCIe. Also, the large variety of PMC I/O cards from GSC can be used on a PCIe adapter.
VersaLogic have released a range of high reliability, rugged Mini PCIe modules, providing a simple, economical, standardized way to add I/O and storage functions to embedded computer products.
