Trenton Technology BPX6376 2U Butterfly Server Class PCI Express Backplane

Trenton Technology's BPX6736 is a server-class backplane with four PCI Express™ option card slots. The butterfly form factor of the BPX6736 is designed for use in a 2U chassis.

Features:

  • Butterfly form factor supports PCI-Express™ option cards
  • Supports 2U Chassis designs
  • One SHB Express™ (PICMG® 1.3) System Host Board Slot
  • One x16 PCI Express Slot (mechanical)
  • Three x8 PCI Express Slots (mechanical)
  • Audio port for speaker and microphone interface
  • Optional two USB 2.0 backplane I/O connections
  • Optional 10/100/1000Base-T backplane Ethernet port

System Host Board Slot

The BPX6376 accepts an SHB Express™ (PICMG® 1.3) compliant (server class) processor such as a Trenton NLT/NLI, SLT/SLI or MCX-series system host board. Using an MCX-series SHB will maximize the capabilities of all available PCI Express option card slots.

PCI Express Serial Slots

PCIe1 and PCIe3 option card slots are located on side B of the butterfly backplane. Side B is opposite the SHB and the side B slots are driven by x1 PCI express links from a Trenton MCX-series SHB. PCIe4 and PCIe2 are located on side A of the backplane and are driven with x8 PCI Express electrical links from a server-class SHB. PCIe4 is a x16 and PCIe2 is a x8 mechanical slot. Trenton SHBs support the auto-negotiation and link training features that enables all of the option card slots to support x8, x4 and x1 PCI Espress cards with PCIe4 also capable of supporting x16 PCI Express option cards with a x8 PCIe link.

Mechanical interferences may exist between the SHB's cooling solution and certain types of option card heat sinks used on PCI Express option cards installed in backplane slots PCIe2 and PCIe4. To ensure proper mechanical clearances regardless of option card heat sink type, Trenton recommends using either half-length or quarter-length PCI Express option cards in these backplane slots. Please contact Sarsen Technology on +44 1672 511166 for details of the mechanical compatibility.

USB Audio Controller

The audio controller on the BPX6736 backplane eliminates the need to dedicate an option card slot to a sound card. The USB audio controller supports a variety of speaker, headset and microphone configurations. The high-performance stereo audio ADC/DAC, general purpose I/O connections and codec functionality are key features of the BPX6736's audio controller.

The USB4 port from the Trenton MCX-series SHB provides the input for the USB audio controller and the USB4 input becomes Audio0 on the BPX6736 backplane. If a Trenton NLT/NLI or SLT/SLI SHB is used, then the SHBs must be factory-equipped with the optional USB routing to the backplane. Likewise non-Trenton SHBs must provide the optional USB I/O backplane routing defined in the PICMG 1.3 specification in order to enable the audio functionality of the Trenton BPX6736 backplane.

Optional USB 2.0 Interfaces

Trenton's BPX6736 provides one USB 2.0 header capable of supporting two general purpose USB 2.0 backplane interface ports.

Optional Ethernet Interface

Trenton's BPX6736 backplane supports the optional Ethernet routing feature of the SHB Express (PICMG 1.3) specification. One 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet RJ-45 connector is available for use on the Ethernet version of the backplane. The Ethernet port is located on Side B of the backplane. This required connector location may necessitate a mechanical modification to the chassis in order to facilitate proper backplane mounting within the enclosure. Please contact Sarsen Technology on +44 1672 511166 for full details.

Power Indicators

Surface-mount LEDs provide a convenient visual check for +5V, -5V, +5V AUX, +12V, -12V and +3.3V power connection and status. CAUTION: Never install or remove the SHB or any option card from the BPX6736 backplane if the +5V AUX LED is GREEN. If the system appears to be off and the +5V AUX LED is GREEN, you need to remove or turn-off the incoming power to the system power supply.

Auxiliary Power Connections

The +12V power connectors on the BPX6736 route auxiliary power to the SHB's edge connectors. The new capability of PICMG 1.3 compliant SHBs and backplanes eliminates the need for auxiliary power connections on the system host board.
