Intel Xeon NLI System Host Board

Trenton Technology’s NLI system host board (SHB) or single board computer
(SBC) turns the promise of PCI Express™ into a reality. The high-speed SHB to backplane
PCI Express links employed on the NLI strip away parallel bus bandwidth limitations while
unleashing the processing power of the next generation Intel® Xeon™ processors.
The NLI features
the Intel® E7520 chipset, an 800MHz system bus, dual channel DDR2-400 memory interfaces, dual
Gigabit Ethernet ports, dual Serial ATA/150 ports, dual USB 2.0 ports with two additional USB
2.0 interfaces and an advanced Ultra XGA video port. PCI Express, PCI and PCI-X option card
support makes the NLI an ideal choice for current as well as future industrial computing
applications.
Processor
Single Intel® Xeon™ processors at speeds of 2.8GHz to 3.6GHz*
Processor Package: FC-mPGA4 package (604-pin)
*Higher speeds as available
Chipset
The NLI uses the Intel® E7520 chipset featuring an 800MHz system bus,
Hyper-Threading Technology and a dual channel DDR2-400 memory interface. Three x8 PCI
Express interfaces are supported by the NLI’s chipset. See the PCI Express Interfaces
section for details on how the NLI implements PCI Express. The Intel® E6300ESB I/O Controller
Hub supports the NLI’s dual Serial ATA/150 ports, four USB 2.0 interfaces, dual Ultra ATA/100
interfaces and the video and Ethernet controllers.
The I/O Controller Hub’s LPC interface is
routed to the board’s controlled impedance connector and supports an optional I/O expansion
board (Trenton’s IOB30) for legacy I/O and serial port communications. Communications
between the Intel® E7520 Memory Controller Hub and the I/O Controller Hub occurs over a
266MB/s Hub Interface.
PCI Express Interfaces
Trenton Technology's NLI system host board provides two x8 PCI Express
links, one x4 PCI Express link and five PCI Express reference clocks routed to edge connectors
A and B. These PCI Express links are used on SHB Express™ backplanes to support PCI Express
option cards and bridge chips that provide PCI/PCI-X option card support. During system
initialization the NLI automatically negotiates with the devices connected to the PCI Express
links in order to set up communication between these devices. The net result is that the NLI
system host board supports communication to x1, x4, x8, x16 PCI Express boards and PCI Express
switch chips as well as PCI/PCI-X cards via PCI Express-to-PCI/PCI-X bridge technology on the
backplane.
Key features of the NLI System Host Board include:
- Intel® Xeon™ processors with the Intel® E7520 chipset
- Provides PCI Express™ interfaces to the backplane
- Compatible with the SHB Express™ (PICMG® 1.3) specification
- Supports 32-bit and 64-bit applications via Intel® Extended Memory 64 Technology
- Supports dual channel DDR2-400 memory, 8GB maximum
- Dual Gigabit Ethernet
- Dual Serial ATA/150 and dual USB 2.0 ports with two additional USB 2.0 interfaces
- Supports PCI Express, PCI-X and PCI option cards
