Extreme Engineering Solutions (X-ES) is committed to developing COTS boards that support the entire Freescale QorIQ Communications Platforms product line, beginning with the first generation of processor families: P1, P2, P3, P4, and P5. Furthermore, X-ES provides QorIQ products in seven different form factors, including air-cooled PMC/XMC, conduction-cooled PMC/XMC, 3U VPX, 3U cPCI, 6U VPX, 6U cPCI, and VME.
Five processors on seven form factors results in a staggering 35 development projects. This is a daunting task, even for X-ES with our rapid development capability. Fortunately, it is not this complex.
Because Freescale has provided pin-compatibility across the QorIQ families, it is not necessary for X-ES to develop 35 boards. There are pin compatible processors between the P1 and P2 families and between the P3, P4, and P5 families. Specifically:
Putting pin-compatible processors into two groups changes the equation. Now the development effort requires support for only two processor architectures on seven form factors – a total of 14 unique COTS board designs as opposed to 35 unique designs.
