Rugged Thunderbolt 1553 Interfaces

Rugged Thunderbolt 1553 Interfaces

While the rest of us were more concerned with Peloton, baking banana bread and completing Netflix, the incredible team at Alta Data spent the pandemic putting a huge amount of effort into R&D and investing in new manufacturing technology. One of the most exciting innovations to come out of the factory recently is the NLINE family of flexible, rugged in-line 1553 interfaces.

NLINE provides customers with a logical extension to the very successful real-time Ethernet ENET™ product line. In particular, the NLINE-T1553 product opens up many 1553 integration options for both deployed systems and less demanding lab usage.

What is Thunderbolt?
Thunderbolt is the name of a hardware interface for the connection of external peripherals to a computer. With a maximum speed of 40Gbps, it's one of the fastest ports on the market today; on par with the upgraded Thunderbolt 4 port and double the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 2 (20 Gbps). All Thunderbolt 3 ports are also USB Type-C 3.1 ports and use the Type-C's thin, reversible connector.

Benefits
The NLINE-T1553 embeds Alta’s 1553 design directly into MIL-810G/461F qualified cable assemblies, allowing customers to connect and get up and running with no fuss. The Thunderbolt interface provides full the PCI Express (PCIe) functions of a 1553 interface board, right down to the hardware interrupts. In most cases, the application code used with the NLINE-T1553 is exactly the same as the code used with a PCIe card. This means the customer can now decide to lose a PCIe card slot, or use an external device via an in-line USB-C cable.

Security
NLINE products are essentially FPGA hardware-based UDP thin servers that provide real-time Ethernet/1553 bridging/conversion, which reduces the threat of viruses or internal hacking. These rugged interfaces provide all the advanced controls of traditional 1553 appliances, but additionally  can simultaneously auto bridge time-stamped 1553 UDP packets without any programming. There is a fast auto-boot feature where 1553 and MIL-1760 RX controls can be managed through standard socket communications as implemented in almost every OS, even DO-178 compliant systems.

Why Do I Need an NLINE-T1553 in My System?
From saving card slots, or removing worriers about future hardware and OS versions, these products simplify 1553 integration. The Thunderbolt product will allow PCI Express capability, which means even real-time hardware interrupt applications can be done via a cable.
