What is a System on Module (SoM)?

What is a System on Module?

A System on Module (SoM) is a small embedded computing device that contains a microprocessor, memory, and other necessary components for a complete embedded system. SoM is a highly integrated, pre-designed computing module that can be easily integrated into a larger system without the need for detailed knowledge of the hardware or low-level software.

Typically, an SoM includes a processor, memory, storage, networking components, and other peripherals, all integrated into a single board. This board is designed to be plugged into a baseboard, which provides the I/O interfaces for the SoM. The baseboard can be designed to meet specific application requirements, and the SoM can be easily replaced or upgraded when necessary, without changing the entire system.

SoMs are commonly used in embedded applications such as industrial automation, medical devices, and aerospace systems, where a small form factor, low power consumption, and high reliability are required. SoMs can significantly reduce the time and cost of developing a custom embedded system and allow for rapid prototyping and development.

One of our key partners for System on Module design is DAVE Embedded Systems. Their range of small form factor ARM-based SoMs offer engineers a key building block in the design of their own embedded system across a number of different markets.

Their System on Modules are utilised in industrial automation, healthcare, home automation, transport, automotive, defence and space, and in 2023 DAVE was included in the catalogue of the Italian national space industry (www.italianspaceindustry.it) which brings together all the companies involved in the supply chain for projects dedicated to space.

All development and production takes place in-house and in compliance with market standards. The R&D department is joined by a highly specialised Manufacturing team, which is able to perform the most complex processes such as SnPb welding process for avionics and the sealing/coating of BGA components.

To fully round off the product support, DAVE has grown their software development department over the years, culminating in the creation of ToloMEO, their package of software services that can be integrated on every embedded system, and modules are available for IoT, Machine Learning, Industrial Blockchain, Cyber Security and Embedded Device Management.
