Introducing ORCA – i.MX8M-based Industrial Grade System on Module

i.MX8M-based Industrial Grade System on Module

The i.MX 8M family of application processors from NXP provide industry-leading audio, voice, and video processing for applications that scale from consumer home audio to industrial building automation and mobile computers.

One of the leading European manufacturers of embedded solutions, DAVE Embedded Systems, has embraced the NXP i.MX8M processors and has designed a portfolio of System on Module (SoM) products based on this technology.

The latest addition to the range is the ORCA SOM, which is built with the NXP i.MX8M Plus System On Chip (SoC) providing users with ARM Cortex-A53 plus Cortex-M7 plus a Neural Processing Unit.

The ORCA SoM is designed around a compact SODIMM DDR4 260pins pinout form factor (68 x 45mm), and is targeted for industrial applications requiring extended temperature operation from -40 to +85° C.

Key Features:
  • 2/4 ARM Cortex-A53 @1.6 - 1.8GHz + Cortex-M7
  • 3D GPU GC7000 integrated
  • Neural Processing Unit inside up to 2.3 TOPS
  • Single chip DDR4 RAM 4-8GB
  • Advanced security thanks to SE0S0 integration
  • eMMC or NAND SLC mass storage on board
  • Boot from NOR for safe applications
  • 2xGb Ethernet with PHY on board and TSN support
  • Dual CSI for stereo cameras
  • Single 3.3V Power Supply with very low power stand by
  • SODIMM DDR4 260pins Form factor

By designing ORCA as an SoM access to all functionalities on the SoC are available, including the ARM Cortex-A53 architecture with up to 4 cores available and the independent ARM cortex-A7, the Graphical Processing Unit and the Neural Processing Unit. The ORCA SOM SoM integrates a single chip RAM DDR4 and multiple choices for storage, with options including either an eMMC flash or a NAND single Level Chip, depending on customer preference. For extra flexibility these options are also available mounted and connected on the carrier board as both buses are available at pinout level.

The ORCA offers dual Video Inputs for stereo cameras or dual Ethernet interfaces with Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) support. For peace of mind the NXP Edge Lock SE0S0 Secure Element is already on board.

The ORCA is available in an evaluation kit which gives customers everything they need to start developing their application. All schematics and layout footprint are provided, and DAVE Embedded also offers a live session with their technical team to help users kick start their development.

Please speak to one of our engineers about how your application could benefit from using the ORCA system on module.
